Mario Götze Wants to Stay at Eintracht Frankfurt Despite Unexpected Squad Exclusion
Despite his recent exclusion from the squad for Eintracht Frankfurt's away match against 1. FSV Mainz 05, Mario Götze apparently envisions his future remaining with the Eagles.
The 33-year-old is reported to have decided to commit to another year in Frankfurt, undeterred by the recent disappointment.
Götze was surprisingly not selected by coach Albert Riera for the 20-man squad for Sunday's game against Mainz, which ended in a 1-2 defeat. It was confirmed that there was no injury; the midfielder was fit and fully available. Consequently, he reportedly expressed considerable surprise at Coach Riera's decision.
Speaking on Saturday evening, Sporting Director Markus Krösche addressed the situation but declined to elaborate on the specific reasons behind Götze's omission from the squad. He stated, 'You don't expect me to comment on the matchday squad right now,' adding, 'Mario is an extremely important player for us, both on and off the pitch.'
Contract Talks Between Götze and Frankfurt Reportedly Far Advanced
Discussions between Eintracht, Götze, and his advisor Volker Struth are said to be so progressed that a new agreement could be signed during the upcoming international break. The 33-year-old's current contract in Frankfurt is set to expire at the end of the ongoing season.
While Götze was a consistent starter in Riera's initial matches – the 2014 World Cup winner was in the starting eleven for the Spaniard's debut against Union Berlin (1-1) and for home victories against Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-0) and SC Freiburg (2-0) – he remained on the bench for the full 90 minutes in the two games preceding the Mainz loss, against FC St. Pauli (0-0) and 1. FC Heideheim (1-0).
