Chelsea Star Marc Cucurella Dreams of FC Barcelona Return
Marc Cucurella only truly developed into a world-class player after leaving FC Barcelona, which now fuels a significant career ambition for him.
Chelsea player Marc Cucurella has revealed his dream of returning to his formative club, FC Barcelona. However, he also emphasized that he currently feels very comfortable in England with the Blues.
Ahead of a Spanish national team friendly against Egypt, the left-back shared his thoughts and future plans with journalists, addressing a potential move to the Catalan club.
"It would be difficult to turn down something like that," Cucurella stated. "It's not just about me; I also have to consider my family. If it's meant to happen, it will happen. We'll see what decisions are made. One always thinks about a return. However, my family and I are very happy in England. But this will only become a topic in a few years."
Cucurella's Limited Professional Appearances for Barca
Cucurella is not the first Chelsea player to recently speak about a potential departure. Just recently, Blues midfielder Enzo Fernandez expressed his desire to live in Madrid during a live stream, which drew the ire of Chelsea fans. The club faces the risk of missing out on Champions League qualification in the Premier League – a setback that would be difficult for top professionals to accept.
Cucurella came through Espanyol Barcelona's youth academy before moving to cross-town rivals Barca as a teenager. His sole senior appearance for FC Barcelona's first team came in the 2017/18 season: a seven-minute cameo in the first round of the Copa del Rey, which, as the team later won the competition, allows him to be called a cup winner.
Loans to Eibar and Getafe followed. In the summer of 2021, Brighton secured him for 20 million Euros, bringing him to England. Just one year later, Chelsea paid over three times that amount – 65 million Euros – to bring the defender to Stamford Bridge.
In Germany, the 2024 European champion gained particular notoriety due to a controversial handball incident in the European Championship quarter-final against Germany nearly two years ago. In extra time, with the score at 1-1, a shot from Jamal Musiala struck his arm from close range. To the great dismay of German fans, no penalty was awarded to the DFB team, and Spain ultimately won the match 2-1.
