Manuel Neuer Under Scrutiny: Spanish Media Questions Bayern Goalkeeper's Form
Immediately preceding the highly anticipated Champions League showdown between Real Madrid and FC Bayern Munich, the long-serving Bayern goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, found himself at the center of attention.
Various Spanish media outlets dedicated extensive reports to the shot-stopper, critically examining his current form. It was highlighted that the 40-year-old goalkeeper traveled to Madrid with some uncertainties surrounding his play, and his usually unshakeable vigilance had recently been called into question.
Despite Neuer having occasional unfortunate moments this season, he started for the elite European clash on Tuesday evening. However, in the first leg of the quarter-finals, he then showcased his class, becoming the match-winner thanks to several spectacular saves, earning him the "Player of the Match" award. Nevertheless, not everything was flawless.
Upon his return from injury shortly before, in the match against SC Freiburg, he made a blunder when he inadequately parried a corner kick during the hosts' temporary 2-0 lead, clearing the ball directly to an opposing player's feet. Only a strong final phase allowed Bayern to turn a deficit into a narrow 3-2 victory.
Misstep in Bayern's Last Duel with Real Madrid
Neuer also played a decisive role in the last direct encounter between Real Madrid and Bayern. After a 2-2 draw in the first leg, Bayern held a 1-0 lead in the return fixture thanks to strong saves from their goalkeeper. However, just minutes before the end, Neuer fumbled a seemingly harmless shot, which Real striker Joselu capitalized on for the equalizer. Shortly thereafter, the Spaniard even scored the winning goal.
Coach Vincent Kompany recently gave a strong show of support for his number one, emphasizing that he still sees Neuer "at the highest level." "At 40, you are still young. What matters is the hunger," explained the Belgian coach.
This season, Neuer has repeatedly been sidelined due to extended injuries. Usually, his deputy, Jonas Urbig, filled in, but Urbig himself was recently out with a capsule injury sustained while with the German national team.
