Lukas Kwasniok on the Brink: Is Dino Toppmöller the 1. FC Köln's Next Manager?
The 1. FC Köln remains entrenched in crisis, failing to find a way out even after the Rheinderby. Head coach Lukas Kwasniok's tenure appears to be drawing to a close.
Despite the mounting pressure, Lukas Kwasniok displayed a defiant spirit, fiercely resisting the impending outcome following yet another setback. "I will fight for this damn job with everything I have," declared the 44-year-old after the thrilling 3-3 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the 100th Rheinderby. However, it might already be too late.
Sporting Director Thomas Kessler conspicuously avoided a clear vote of confidence on Saturday evening, stating that an "open-ended" discussion on Sunday would bring clarity. "We need to analyze this objectively and rationally. We are profoundly disappointed today because we only secured one point. The expectation was clearly three points," Kessler commented, emphasizing his need to "sleep on it peacefully" before making any decisions.
Kwasniok, conversely, refused to acknowledge a potential dismissal in the immediate aftermath of the disappointment. He asserted his "absolute conviction that I am the right man in the right place" and maintained that he still felt the backing of the club's leadership.
"They know my quality, and I know what a great job I have," Kwasniok stated. He believed his team delivered another solid performance, yet once again failed to secure the deserved reward. "All I can say is: try to find someone with more conviction. And I feel that within the team; we are 100 percent a unit."
Meanwhile, speculation about his successor is already rife. Reports suggest that Kwasniok's assistant coach Rene Wagner and U19 coach Stefan Ruthenbeck could potentially take over as interim managers to finish the season. Former Eintracht Frankfurt coach Dino Toppmöller is being considered as a strong candidate for a long-term solution in the summer. It was also noted that Thomas Letsch, who previously coached in Bochum and Salzburg, was present at Saturday's derby.
Kwasniok's Exit? 1. FC Köln Cancels Sunday Training
Kwasniok took charge of Köln at the beginning of the season, but after a decent start in the Bundesliga, the team has steadily plummeted towards the relegation zone. Recently, they have endured seven consecutive matches without a victory, and the promoted side has managed only two wins in their last 18 league games. The club now faces the looming threat of an eighth relegation in its history.
The point against Gladbach, secured by Eric Martel's late header in the 84th minute, brings FC "closer to our overall goal, which is staying up by mid-May. That's the finish line, and we will give it our all until then," Kwasniok affirmed. "I am convinced that hard work and diligence will ultimately be rewarded."
But will Kessler and the board grant him that opportunity? Their actions suggest otherwise. The planned training session for Sunday was cancelled. "We can certainly read the table, and ultimately, we know how challenging the tasks will be in the coming weeks," Kessler remarked. "And it's clear that you have to make some adjustments to be able to win a football match again."
Above all, the paramount goal is "for 1. FC Köln to remain in the Bundesliga," whether with or without Kwasniok.
