For months, Liverpool and French defender Ibrahima Konate have been engaged in talks regarding a new contract. Recent reports indicate that these negotiations are now nearing a successful conclusion, signaling an imminent breakthrough.
According to a French newspaper report, discussions between the club and the player have significantly intensified over the past few weeks. It is understood that an agreement is not far off, with only minor details remaining to be finalized.
The report does not specify the exact duration of Konate's potential new deal with the Reds. However, it seems certain that Liverpool is acting to prevent any possibility of their defensive cornerstone leaving on a free transfer in the future. The 26-year-old's current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2026, which could have allowed him to depart the Premier League club without a transfer fee.
Should an extension be finalized, it would effectively thwart the ambitions of several top European clubs that have reportedly shown interest in signing Konate in recent months. Real Madrid, in particular, was said to have the central defender high on their transfer wishlist.
Real Madrid was reportedly eyeing Konate amidst concerns over potential departures of long-serving defensive stalwarts David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger. Speculation suggested Alaba's departure was almost certain due to his contract situation, while Rüdiger's future, also with a contract nearing its end, remained unclear at the time.
Bayern Munich Also Reportedly Showed Interest in Konate
At one point, Bayern Munich was also rumored to be in the running for Konate, aiming to prevent a potential departure of their defensive leader Dayot Upamecano. However, the French international has since extended his contract with the German champions.
Konate joined the Reds in 2021 from RB Leipzig for a transfer fee of €40 million. In the recently concluded 2023/24 season, he was a consistent starter under then-coach Jürgen Klopp, making 42 appearances across all competitions and scoring two goals.
