Laura Freigang's Brace Secures Champions League Dream for Eintracht Frankfurt
Eintracht Frankfurt's women's team has reached the third round of Champions League qualification thanks to a brace from captain Laura Freigang. In the mini-tournament held at their home stadium, Stadion am Brentanobad, Niko Arnautis's team defeated Swedish club Malmö FF 2-0 (1-0) in the final. This victory keeps their hopes alive for a second appearance in the club's history in Europe's premier competition.
In a match dominated by Frankfurt, Freigang put her team ahead just before halftime with a header from a corner kick (39th minute). She then sealed the victory in the second half (76th minute).
The 28-year-old, who also contributed a goal and an assist in the decisive win against Omonia Nicosia (8-0) on Wednesday, appeared unfazed by the ongoing investigations into potential anti-doping violations in her second competitive match since the news broke.
Wolfsburg and Frankfurt to Compete in Round Three
The draw for the third qualifying round, which will feature two-legged ties (August 26th/September 2nd), will take place on Tuesday at 1:00 PM. Vice-champions VfL Wolfsburg will also enter the competition at this stage.
Only the double winners, FC Bayern, have directly qualified for the league phase. Should Frankfurt successfully navigate this final hurdle, they would participate in the Champions League group stage for the second time, following their debut in the 2023/24 season.
