Kjell Wätjen's Future at BVB Uncertain: Will the Talent Leave Borussia Dortmund This Summer?
Following several prominent departures, Borussia Dortmund might face the loss of another young talent. Kjell Wätjen's future with the Black and Yellows is reportedly uncertain. There might not be a permanent place for the 20-year-old midfielder in the squad from the upcoming season.
Wätjen is currently on loan to second-division club VfL Bochum, where he is primarily used as a rotational player. Coach Uwe Rösler relies on other players in central midfield. Therefore, discussions are underway about whether there could be another loan spell or even a permanent transfer to a new club this summer. Several Bundesliga clubs have reportedly shown interest, but an extended loan at Bochum is also not ruled out.
In the short to medium term, Wätjen's prospects for regular playing time at BVB are limited. Experienced players like Felix Nmecha, Marcel Sabitzer, Jobe Bellingham, and Carney Chukwuemeka are already available in his position for the upcoming season. Furthermore, Dortmund plans to sign another defensive midfielder.
Kjell Wätjen joined BVB's youth academy from FSV Gevelsberg in 2015. In 2024, he was promoted to the professional squad and made four Bundesliga appearances, contributing one assist. His current contract with Borussia Dortmund runs until 2028.
