Kimi Antonelli Secures Japan Pole Position, Max Verstappen Disappoints
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli continued his remarkable run, clinching pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix. The 19-year-old Italian delivered the fastest lap in qualifying, outperforming his teammate and championship leader George Russell, who qualified second. This marks Antonelli's second consecutive pole, following his success in China.
"I am very happy with this session. I felt very comfortable in the car," Antonelli stated, looking ahead to the race. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
Behind the Mercedes duo, Oscar Piastri showcased McLaren's strong progress by securing third place, with Charles Leclerc placing fourth for Ferrari. Lando Norris completed the top five in the second McLaren, just ahead of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in sixth.
Verstappen's Struggles Continue
The qualifying session proved disappointing for Max Verstappen, who has a dominant record at Suzuka in recent years. The Dutch driver failed to advance to the third segment of qualifying, finishing eleventh. Adding to his woes, he was outqualified by his Red Bull teammate, Isack Hadjar, who secured an impressive eighth place.
Nico Hülkenberg also experienced a setback. After showing good pace in practice, the German driver could only manage thirteenth position for Audi. Hülkenberg is still searching for his first points of the season, while his teammate Gabriel Bortoleto delivered a strong performance, qualifying ninth.
Formula 1 Enters Extended Break
Following Sunday's Grand Prix, Formula 1 will enter an extended hiatus. Due to the cancellation of races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the season is set to resume in early May with the Miami Grand Prix.
