Josko Gvardiol Extends Manchester City Contract Amidst Past Interest from European Giants

Manchester City has secured the long-term future of defender Josko Gvardiol by extending his contract by three years, keeping him at the club until 2031. This move effectively ties down a key player who had been the subject of interest from other major European clubs.

Gvardiol expressed his immediate desire to extend his stay upon learning of City's intentions. He stated, "As soon as I found out that City wanted to extend my contract, I had the feeling that this is what I wanted." The 24-year-old is optimistic about the club's potential, believing they are a "world-class team that is young and full of potential," and is convinced they will achieve significant success in the coming years.

Reports suggest that a substantial salary increase played a role in the contract extension. Previously, there was significant competition for the Croatian international's signature. In May, speculation mounted regarding interest from FC Bayern Munich, but by June, Sky reported that Bayern had withdrawn from the pursuit due to the high transfer fee required.

Real Madrid Also Reportedly Considered Josko Gvardiol

Manchester City initially paid a hefty €90 million to sign Gvardiol from RB Leipzig in 2023. This substantial price tag is believed to have deterred Real Madrid, who were also reportedly monitoring the defender. While new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is said to be a keen admirer of the versatile left-footed player, who can operate as a center-back or left-back, the club ultimately signed Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer instead of pursuing Gvardiol.

Gvardiol's situation at City is now clear. He has been a consistent starter under former manager Pep Guardiola for the past three years, despite missing several months in the latter half of the previous season due to a shin fracture sustained in January.

Josko Gvardiol Aims for Full Fitness by Season Start

He managed to make two appearances towards the end of the season. However, his fitness was not sufficient for him to be at his peak for the World Cup. While he started the first two group games for Croatia, their former national team coach Zlatko Dalic utilized him sparingly in the crucial match against Ghana and the subsequent round of 16 exit against Portugal. Dalic had acknowledged that Gvardiol would not immediately regain top form and emphasized not taking unnecessary risks if he wasn't fully fit, with Gvardiol only coming on for brief periods in those key matches.

Gvardiol is now targeting full fitness by the start of the new Premier League season on August 23rd against Bournemouth. He is enthusiastic about working with the new manager, Enzo Maresca, Guardiola's successor, and believes they can achieve "great things together."
