Bam Adebayo Blasts Critics After Historic 83-Point NBA Game

Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo faced significant backlash for the controversial manner in which he achieved his historic 83-point performance. The All-Star center is now vehemently defending himself against these criticisms.

"To all the armchair coaches out there: You're all blaming me, but the responsibility lies with the head coach," Adebayo stated defensively on Thursday after the 112-105 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. "I wasn't the one who kept me in a one-on-one situation for the entire game until I had 70 points. At that point, I had 70 points with nine minutes left to play. Do you honestly think I wouldn't try to break the record then?"

On Tuesday night, Bam Adebayo made history against the Washington Wizards, scoring an incredible 83 points. This achievement moved him to second place on the NBA's all-time single-game scoring list, surpassing Kobe Bryant's 81-point performance for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Toronto Raptors in 2006. Wilt Chamberlain still holds the undisputed record with 100 points.

While Adebayo was widely celebrated for his incredible scoring feat, he also faced criticism regarding the method by which he accumulated his 83 points. The game was already decided in the fourth quarter, with the Heat leading by over 20 points, yet Coach Erik Spoelstra kept him on the court. "And when he got to 60, we just kept going, thinking maybe 70 was possible," the 55-year-old coach explained. "I didn't even think about taking him out at that point. We just let him continue."

Another significant point of contention was the 43 free throws the center was awarded during the game – a new NBA record. In the final minutes, Heat players even intentionally fouled to stop the clock and extend Adebayo's time on the court. Adebayo, however, robustly defended his approach: "It's madness to call this unsportsmanlike behavior. I was at 70 points with nine minutes left on the clock. Who would seriously ask to be substituted then? Certainly not. Anyone in my situation would try to break the record. You can't blame me for that. And if someone does – I don't care. Many are just frustrated because they've never been in a position to achieve such a success."

Some of the criticism also originates from fans of the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant, whose 81-point game against the Raptors in 2006 is often considered "more honest." In his game, Bryant received "only" 20 free throws, shot much more efficiently from the field and beyond the arc, and the outcome of the game was only decided much later in the fourth quarter.

"I knew there would be two sides to it," Adebayo commented. "Some will celebrate you because 83 is 83, no matter how you get them. Others will say it wasn't like Kobe's performance."
