Hansi Flick Pushes for Joao Cancelo's Barcelona Stay: Two Conditions Set
Hansi Flick has reportedly given his internal approval for a key Barcelona player to remain with the club past the current season.
Joao Cancelo, currently on loan to FC Barcelona from Manchester City until the end of the season, is a player new coach Hansi Flick is keen to retain. The former Germany national team coach has reportedly given his green light for Barcelona to pursue a new agreement for Cancelo.
However, the potential move is contingent on two crucial conditions. Firstly, the 30-year-old must secure a release from his parent club, Manchester City. This is anticipated to be feasible as City reportedly do not have him in their long-term plans. Secondly, Cancelo would need to agree to a substantial salary reduction. Barcelona's ongoing financial challenges mean they simply cannot afford his current reported annual salary of €12 million.
Cancelo's contract with Manchester City is valid until 2027.
Joao Cancelo's Prior Achievements Include German Championship with FC Bayern
Cancelo initially joined the Catalan club on loan in the 2023/24 season. The offensively potent full-back has been a significant contributor for Barcelona, playing in twelve competitive matches this season, scoring one goal and providing four assists.
Before his time at Barcelona, Cancelo had stints with several major European clubs, including Manchester City, FC Bayern Munich, and Juventus Turin. During his half-season spell with Bayern in 2023, he notably helped them win the German championship.
