Nach lediglich 81 Tagen beenden Zweitligist Hannover 96 und Jörg Schmadtke ihre Zusammenarbeit. Second-division club Hannover 96 and Jörg Schmadtke are parting ways after a mere 81 days. The promotion-contending club announced on Sunday the "amicable separation" from the former sports managing director, effective March 31. His position will be temporarily filled by CEO Henning Bindzus and Sporting Director Ralf Becker; a permanent replacement will be decided "in due course," as stated by the club.
Schmadtke, aged 62, had only recently celebrated his return to German professional football on Christmas Eve 2025, taking office on January 1 as the successor to Marcus Mann, who moved to RB Salzburg. His contract, originally set to run until February 28, 2029, is thus being terminated prematurely.
During his first, highly successful tenure from 2009 to 2013, Schmadtke notably guided 96 to a fourth-place finish in the Bundesliga (2010/11 season) and secured two consecutive participations in the Europa League for the team. Prior to his second stint at Hannover 96, Schmadtke served as Sporting Director for FC Liverpool until February 2024, following previous roles at 1. FC Köln and VfL Wolfsburg.
