FIFA's Controversial Balogun Decision Sparks Outrage Amidst Alleged Trump Intervention

US President Donald Trump is reportedly the catalyst behind FIFA's decision to overturn a red card suspension for US striker Folarin Balogun.

According to reports from The New York Times and AFP, citing unnamed sources, the US head of state personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino after the recent match to request a review of Balogun's red card.

On Sunday, FIFA indeed rescinded the red card Balogun received in the Round of 16 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina (2-0), converting the one-game suspension into a probationary period. This allows the 25-year-old to be eligible for the USA's Round of 16 match against Belgium on Monday evening (local time). The Belgian Football Association has lodged a protest against this decision. Trump, on his platform Truth Social, promptly thanked FIFA for "doing the right thing and reversing a great injustice!" FIFA initially did not respond to a SID inquiry regarding the reports involving Trump.

World Cup Scandal? "The Rules Were Clearly Broken"

FIFA regulations stipulate an automatic one-game suspension for a red card, a decision against which the player's team cannot appeal. Nevertheless, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee announced on Sunday that it had altered the punishment, changing it "from an unconditional one-match ban to a conditional one-match ban, with a one-year probationary period." The Belgian Football Association, as the USA's next opponent, intends to challenge this decision.

Nicholas McGeehan of the organization FairSquare, which has filed a complaint against Infantino with the FIFA Ethics Committee, expressed his indignation to SID: "The rules were clearly broken in a way that benefits the political interests of the US President," McGeehan stated. The question is, "what role did the FIFA President play in this. National federations and politicians should demand answers from FIFA. If the host country used its political influence on the FIFA President to create an unfair advantage, it would be a scandalous violation of the rules and a manipulation of the competition."
