FC Bayern Loanee Felipe Chavez Rejects National Team Call-Up: "I Deliberately Decided Against It!"

Felipe Chavez, an 18-year-old talent currently on loan from FC Bayern to 1. FC Köln, has declined a nomination to Peru's senior national team. Since his winter move, Chavez has only managed brief appearances for Köln.

Chavez had already made his debut for Peru in a friendly against Chile last October, even before playing for Bayern's senior squad. He notably wore the special number 14 jersey, famously donned by icon Claudio Pizarro in both Peru and Munich.

In January, the midfielder made his first two Bundesliga appearances for Bayern before being loaned to 1. FC Köln until the end of the season on Deadline Day. Bayern Sporting Director Christoph Freund stated Chavez needed to gain regular Bundesliga experience to take the next step, highlighting his "exceptionally strong left foot and great potential." Köln's sporting director, Thomas Kessler, praised his offensive capabilities.

Despite feeling comfortable in Köln, Chavez's athletic integration has been challenging. In seven games since his transfer, he has been substituted on four times, accumulating only 39 minutes. Köln has failed to win any of these matches, sinking deeper into a relegation battle, which led to a change in coaching staff.

Uncertain Future for Felipe Chavez at Köln or FC Bayern

Although Peru intended to call up Chavez for upcoming friendly matches against Senegal and Honduras (Peru has not qualified for the summer World Cup), he voluntarily opted out. The player, born in Aichach, Bavaria, to a Peruvian father and German mother, explained his decision: "While it is a great honor and appreciation of my athletic performance, I deliberately decided against playing for the Peruvian national team." He added, "My focus is clearly on supporting my club and the team as best as possible during a difficult phase of the season. Therefore, I will use the upcoming international break to make myself available and optimally support 1. FC Köln in their mission to stay in the league."

Chavez's future remains as uncertain as Köln's Bundesliga status. Köln holds a buy option in the mid-single-digit millions. Should they exercise it, Bayern could re-sign Chavez in 2027 or 2028 via a buy-back clause, a model similar to Noel Aseko's situation where Bayern promptly reacquired him after a permanent move to Hannover 96.
