According to *Marca*, the roots of this dispute trace back to the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester City several weeks ago. For that match, Arbeloa opted for Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen in the central defense, leaving Asencio on the bench for the entire 90 minutes of the 3-0 victory at the Bernabeu.

The coach then planned to start Asencio in the subsequent La Liga game against Elche.
