Czech Republic Qualifies for World Cup After 20-Year Wait in Penalty Shootout Drama Against Denmark
After two thrilling, nerve-wracking penalty shootouts, the Czech Republic has qualified for a FIFA World Cup for the first time in two decades. In the decisive playoff final, the Czechs defeated Denmark 3-1 in a penalty shootout, after the match in Prague had ended 2-2 after 120 minutes.
Michal Sadilek converted the decisive penalty after three Danish players – Rasmus Höjlund, Anders Dreyer, and Mathias Jensen – had failed to score. During regular play, Pavel Sulc (3rd minute) and Ladislav Krejci (100th minute) put the Czechs ahead twice, but Denmark equalized each time through Joachim Andersen (72nd minute) and Kasper Högh (111th minute).
Supported by the Bundesliga trio Patrik Schick (Bayer Leverkusen), Vladimir Coufal, and Robin Hranac (both TSG Hoffenheim), who were in the starting lineup, the hosts maintained the upper hand. The Czechs had already demonstrated their nerve in the semi-final, overcoming a 0-2 deficit against Ireland to win in a penalty shootout as well. The Czech Republic thus secures a spot at the World Cup and will face South Korea, South Africa, and hosts Mexico in Group A.
