Christoph Freund Defends FC Bayern's Referee Criticism: 'We Won't Be Silenced'

Sporting Director Christoph Freund has robustly defended FC Bayern Munich against backlash for their strong criticism of referee decisions following the recent 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.

"In Leverkusen, there were many emotions and many disputed decisions. We were annoyed, and we articulated that. That is our right; other teams do it too," Freund stated at a press conference. He emphasized the club's unwavering stance: "FC Bayern will continue to represent its opinion in the future. We, as FC Bayern, will always speak our minds and will not be silenced."

The match against Leverkusen was far from smooth, with two incidents, in particular, causing significant discontent among the Bayern camp. These included a yellow-red card shown to Luis Diaz for an alleged dive in the penalty area and a disallowed goal from Harry Kane due to a perceived handball.

Honorary President Uli Hoeneß reacted furiously to the officials' decisions, branding it "the worst performance by a referee team I have ever experienced in a Bundesliga match."

Horst Heldt Defends Referees; Bayern Dismisses Concerns

Ahead of an upcoming match, Union Berlin's Managing Director Horst Heldt stepped in to defend referees, cautioning, "They don't have it easy. Because, of course, every situation is scrutinized very closely and accompanied. And that's not okay." Freund, however, reacted calmly to these concerns, making it clear that FC Bayern did not share such worries.

For the German record champions, the matter is "resolved," Freund explained. He acknowledged the crucial role of officials: "Referees are an important part of football. It's also important that they are protected and can perform their best. Everyone knows this: clubs, players, officials, and coaches. There will always be games with controversial situations and days when performance is better or worse."
