BVB News & Rumors: Lothar Matthäus Criticizes Star, Says He's 'Become a Different Player'
An offensive player is failing to replicate his strong performance from the previous season, a situation that is troubling Lothar Matthäus. Here's an overview of the latest news and rumors concerning BVB.
Lothar Matthäus Delivers Harsh Verdict on Serhou Guirassy
Germany's record international, Lothar Matthäus, has commented on Serhou Guirassy, who is reportedly struggling at Borussia Dortmund this season, using strong language. "That's no longer Guirassy. He has become a different player," Matthäus declared on Sky. The former world-class player's concise judgment was: "He no longer smiles, lacks body tension, and shows no enjoyment."
Last season, Guirassy had reportedly shone for BVB, scoring 13 goals in 14 Champions League matches for the Black and Yellows, earning him the top scorer title in the elite competition. "Guirassy is also no longer the player he was at Stuttgart, where I stated he could have gone to Bayern Munich because he was outstanding there. And even last year in Dortmund," Matthäus added.
Regarding Borussia's forward line, Matthäus believes a change of guard is inevitable in the long term. He suggested, "Fabio Silva is – and Dortmund is planning a new, younger team for the future – an ideal successor." Guirassy's future remains uncertain, with clubs from Saudi Arabia reportedly interested in the Guinean player. Matthäus offered a prediction on the 30-year-old's sporting future, stating, "You might still get a few euros for Guirassy."
This current season, Guirassy has reportedly contributed 18 goals and 6 assists in 40 competitive matches for Dortmund. His contract in the Ruhr region is said to run until 2028.
BVB Rumor: Dortmund Reportedly Eyeing Three International Talents
Borussia Dortmund is reportedly interested in three international top talents, according to Sky. The players in question are Edvin Austbö from Viking Stavanger, Diego Moreira from Racing Strasbourg, and Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal from Stade Rennes.
For Austbö, it is primarily the player himself who is keen on a transfer to take the next step in his career. The 20-year-old left winger's club has reportedly set an €18 million price tag, which allegedly deterred previously interested Hamburger SV.
Diego Moreira is expected to be even more expensive. The Belgian has already accumulated eleven goal contributions in 33 competitive matches for Strasbourg this season, reportedly leading to a minimum price tag of €30 million. The 21-year-old left midfielder moved from Chelsea to Racing in summer 2024 and achieved his definitive breakthrough there this season.
Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal also plays in Ligue 1. The 19-year-old center-back has featured in 14 league games for Rennes this season and made his debut for the Moroccan national team in November. His market value is ten million euros.
