Bucks Waive Cam Thomas: Giannis Antetokounmpo's Last Hope Gone, Playoff Dreams Dashed
The Milwaukee Bucks are seemingly conceding the season, clearing roster spots for promising developmental players. This move comes at the expense of a player who was once hailed as a key acquisition.
To integrate Pete Nance, previously on a two-way contract, into the roster for the remaining games of what has been a disappointing season, the Milwaukee Bucks have waived Cam Thomas. The 24-year-old was placed on the waiver list Monday night. Given the late timing of his release, Thomas faces a challenging road to secure a spot with a new team this season.
Just two months prior, in early February, Bucks GM Jon Horst had lauded Thomas as a crucial piece for Milwaukee's championship aspirations, both for the current season and beyond, following his acquisition directly after being waived by the Brooklyn Nets. However, the landscape within the Bucks organization has drastically shifted, and Thomas's career trajectory is now in question.
Bucks Waive Thomas: 'The Right Move for the Team'
The Bucks' delay in waiving Thomas until March means the talented scorer is unlikely to play significant basketball for the remainder of the current season. Despite his potential to bolster the bench of a contending team, the timing of his release makes such a move impossible, as players waived after March 1st are ineligible for postseason play.
Milwaukee's prolonged hesitation in making this decision is, understandably, linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks have consistently gone to great lengths to appease their franchise player. This included, for instance, reportedly considering a risky buyout of Damian Lillard in an attempt to pair the "Greek Freak" with Myles Turner, a three-point shooting, rim-protecting big man to succeed Brook Lopez. Thomas himself was acquired, despite his somewhat dubious reputation, in an effort to quell persistent trade rumors surrounding Giannis and to salvage a playoff run after a largely disappointing season.
However, these efforts proved futile, partly due to Antetokounmpo's subsequent injury, which reportedly led to another private dispute with the superstar. It is now unequivocally clear that Milwaukee's playoff hopes are dashed, a reality Coach Doc Rivers candidly acknowledged following Thomas's release. "We were just running out of bodies, and ultimately, we had to make a decision on some guys," Rivers stated. "I thought Cam was really good for us overall, and maybe we'll revisit that at some point. But right now, we're not really in the race the way we were when we brought him in. So, we made a decision that, at this point, is the right thing for the team."
For Thomas, who averaged 10.7 points across 18 games with the Bucks, his immediate future now rests on securing a fresh start in the upcoming season.
