The football club 1860 Munich is mourning the loss of its iconic figure, Karsten Wettberg, often referred to as the "King of Giesing." The former coach passed away on Sunday at the age of 84 after a long illness, as confirmed by the Lions.
Wettberg left an indelible mark on the traditional Munich club. During his tenure from February 1990 to June 1991, he guided the team through 54 competitive matches undefeated, leading them to a historic promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.
"The entire Lions family is in deep sorrow," stated 1860 Munich. "Karsten Wettberg was a coaching legend and a person who always championed others. He left a profound legacy far beyond the confines of Giesing, not just within our club."
Karsten Wettberg's Legacy: 51 Championship Titles
Wettberg coached 1860 Munich from 1990 to 1992. Following the successful promotion, he departed the club due to a disagreement with the management. He later returned for a brief period as Vice President between 2007 and 2008.
Beyond his time at 1860, Wettberg's extensive career included coaching roles at SpVgg Unterhaching, Jahn Regensburg, FC Augsburg, and numerous Bavarian amateur clubs. Throughout his remarkable career, the revered coach accumulated an astonishing 51 championship titles.
