SC Paderborn’s Promotion Hopes Fade as Arminia Bielefeld Fights Relegation

SC Paderborn’s pursuit of promotion to the Bundesliga appears to be losing steam in a tightly contested race, while Arminia Bielefeld continues to struggle. Paderborn managed only a 2-2 draw (1-0) against Karlsruher SC at the start of the 33rd matchday. Following their fourth consecutive game without a win, their chances of returning to the top flight are diminishing.

Although coach Ralf Kettemann’s team temporarily moved into third place, the playoff spot, SV Elversberg and Hannover 96 have the opportunity to extend their leads over the weekend. Filip Bilbija (20th minute) had put Paderborn ahead. The team had suffered significant setbacks recently with losses against second-division champions Schalke 04 (2-3) and a heavy defeat in Elversberg (1-5), along with a draw in Hannover (1-1). However, Fabian Schleusener (75th minute) and Shio Fukuda (79th minute) turned the game around for KSC. Sebastian Klaas (85th minute) secured a point for Paderborn.

Paderborn started energetically against Karlsruhe, who are set to finish the season in the mid-table. Bilbija capitalized on a rebound after visiting goalkeeper Hans Christian Bernat failed to hold onto a shot. Mika Baur (37th minute) also hit the post. Karlsruhe also came close to scoring in the first half.

Their goal came after the break. Paderborn squandered several chances to extend their lead to 2-0 before Schleusener and Fukuda struck. SCP reacted with urgency. Klaas quickly equalized, but they were unable to find a winning goal.

Arminia Bielefeld Continues to Fight for Survival

Arminia Bielefeld remains deep in the relegation battle of the 2. Bundesliga following a defeat against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Without their suspended coach Mitch Kniat, the East Westphalians lost 0-2 (0-2) on the Betzenberg and missed a chance to create some distance from the drop zone. Their lead over 17th place remains two points and could shrink further over the weekend.

Marlon Ritter (15th minute, penalty) and Simon Asta (29th minute) decided the contest between the two surprise semi-finalists of the past two DFB-Pokal seasons. For FCK, this ended a streak of three consecutive losses, while for promoted Bielefeld, it marked the end of a positive run of three unbeaten games.

Bielefeld’s coach Kniat had to watch from the stands as his team conceded two goals in the first half. Ritter scored from the spot after Maxwell Gyamfi fouled Tim Handwerker. Asta then extended the lead from close range for an efficient FCK.

Kniat had been given a one-match stadium ban after receiving a red card in the 1-1 draw against VfL Bochum. The 40-year-old had vocally complained to referee Tobias Stieler, and in Kaiserslautern, he was represented by his assistant Daniel Jara. Although Arminia had possession after the break, they were unable to make effective use of it.
