While FC Barcelona is on the verge of securing the LaLiga title, Robert Lewandowski’s future is at a crossroads behind the scenes.
According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, the 37-year-old Polish striker is experiencing significant doubts about continuing his stay with the Blaugrana. The source of these doubts is reportedly Major League Soccer and the club Chicago Fire.
Chicago Fire’s sporting director, Gregg Broughton, had already publicly confirmed their interest in Lewandowski. The figures being discussed are staggering: the offer from the United States is said to be the most lucrative currently available to the striker.
The offer is rumored to be up to 15 million euros gross per season, with performance-based bonuses potentially increasing the total package to as much as 20 million euros per year. For Lewandowski, who reportedly feels very comfortable in his personal life in Barcelona, these sums, combined with a central leading role in MLS, could be the deciding factor in a move across the Atlantic.
Lewandowski: Decision Expected Soon
The impending nature of the decision is underscored by the presence of Lewandowski’s agent. Pini Zahavi, the architect of many major deals, is reported to have already arrived in the Catalan capital. Following initial exploratory talks with the club’s management, a crucial exchange with his client is expected to take place next week.
Notably, Zahavi is coming to Barcelona directly from Italy. Reports suggest he has made inquiries not only with AC Milan but also with Juventus Turin. Intriguingly, Zahavi is also said to have offered Real Madrid star David Alaba, whose contract in Madrid is also expiring, as part of a package to the Italian clubs.
Will Flick Decide Lewandowski’s Fate?
A decisive factor in the Lewandowski puzzle remains Hansi Flick. The Barcelona coach is expected to make a clear statement next week, once the championship is mathematically secured, regarding the sporting role he envisions for the striker next season.
Lewandowski joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich in 2022. Since then, he has scored 119 goals in 189 competitive matches and provided 24 assists.
