Mick Schumacher Reveals Painful Wrist Injury: «A Piece Broke Off»

Mick Schumacher is still struggling to find his footing in the IndyCar Series. His challenging start is compounded by a hand injury sustained during the season’s opening race.

For former Formula 1 driver Mick Schumacher, it’s proving to be a painful first season in the IndyCar Series. Reflecting on his accident at the St. Petersburg/Florida opener, the 27-year-old revealed in a Sky interview, «A piece broke off in my wrist, which I’m still dealing with.» He added, «This means I get out of the car and am in pain, which is obviously suboptimal.»

The son of Formula 1 record world champion Michael Schumacher was forced out of his debut in the very first lap in early March. «It will likely require surgery at the end of the year to put everything back together,» Mick Schumacher stated. «It’s definitely strenuous, and consequently, my right hand has to do a bit more work at the moment.»

Just a few days prior, Schumacher had discussed the differences between an IndyCar and a Formula 1 car. He told RTL/ntv, «It’s not necessarily more difficult, but significantly more strenuous. The car has no power steering, so it’s very mechanical and provides a direct translation of the driving style. It’s a nice feeling because you directly sense what the car is doing.»

In the five season races held so far, some of which have been on ovals, Schumacher has only achieved results outside the top 15. He currently sits in 24th place in the overall standings. The next race is scheduled for May 9th in Indianapolis.
