Manuel Neuer reveals unusual app usage before FC Bayern Munich contract extension

Manuel Neuer has disclosed that an app played a role in his decision-making process regarding his recently completed contract extension with FC Bayern Munich.

«I downloaded an app, similar to those rating systems at a rest stop with traffic light colors: red, yellow, and green,» Neuer told club media. «Then, each time, I would tick: training performance, match performance, how I feel, whether I am happy. It was like a diary, and I must say that in the end, 90 percent was green.»

This approach transformed the decision from a purely gut feeling into a more data-driven process. «It was no longer just a gut decision, but a long journey where I gathered a lot of information. Of course, minor injuries are part of professional football, but they didn’t play a major role. I always trained well and performed well.»

As announced by the Munich club on Friday, the 40-year-old goalkeeper has extended his expiring contract by one season, until the summer of 2027.

Neuer Stays with FC Bayern Until 2027

Neuer further explained, «Two weeks ago, I was already completely sure that I wanted to continue. However, a few weeks prior, I already had a tendency to continue. We just had such important games then, which were my priority.»

The 2014 World Cup winner’s decision-making process was also prolonged due to two muscle fiber tears in his left calf in February and March. «My decision took a bit of time – I simply wanted to take my time here because it’s a very important decision, first and foremost for myself, but also, of course, for the club and our team. Now I am convinced: this is the right decision,» Neuer emphasized.

Neuer Joined Bayern from Schalke in 2011

The support within the team also played an important role. «I am very pleased that the team also wanted me to stay for another year. I have always felt this support. That is a nice confirmation for me,» said Neuer.

The goalkeeper spoke particularly positively about his collaboration with Jonas Urbig and Sven Ulreich. «We get along very well on the pitch – and outside of it, of course. We work for each other,» Neuer stated. «We meet after every training session, talk, coach each other, and try to help each other. Ulle and I are accompanying Jonas in his development process and preparing him for the future.»

Neuer joined Bayern from Schalke 04 in the summer of 2011 for a transfer fee of 30 million euros. Since then, he has made 597 competitive appearances for the Munich club, including 388 in the Bundesliga and 139 in the Champions League, which he won twice (2013 and 2020). Neuer has won the Bundesliga title 13 times with the record champions, the DFB-Pokal six times, and the Club World Cup title twice (also in 2013 and 2020).
