Leicester City’s Lowest Point: Relegated to the Third Division Ten Years After Historic Title Win

Former English football champions Leicester City are facing a grim return to the third division, precisely a decade after their astonishing title triumph.

The ‘Foxes’, who were only relegated from the Premier League in 2025, could not overcome Hull City, drawing 2-2 on the penultimate matchday of the Championship season. This result means they are now mathematically unable to escape the relegation zone.

Liam Millar (18′) and Oli McBurnie (63′) scored for Hull. James Justin (52′, penalty) and Luke Thomas (54′) had temporarily put the hosts ahead.

Leicester’s 2016 league title is widely considered the greatest upset in English football history. This was followed by triumphs in the FA Cup against Chelsea and the Community Shield against Manchester City in 2021. Leicester had previously been relegated to the third-tier League One in 2008 but bounced back after just one year, marking the beginning of a golden era for the club.

This latest downfall has been a slow burn, evident for months. Out of their last 18 league matches, Leicester has only secured one victory. Adding to their woes, the season began with a six-point deduction for breaching financial regulations.

Segments of the fanbase have been protesting against the club’s owner, Thai billionaire Khun Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha. Others are calling for the dismissal of Sporting Director Jon Rudkin or have directed their anger towards the players, with chants like «You are not fit to wear this shirt!»

Even on Tuesday evening, spectators were heard chanting «sack the board.» Former Leicester player Matt Piper described the situation to the BBC as «arguably the worst moment in the club’s history.»
