La Liga Star Sentenced to Lengthy Prison Term for Rape and Assault

Spanish professional footballer Rafa Mir (28), currently playing for FC Elche, has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison by the Fourth Criminal Court of Valencia.

The verdict, confirmed by the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community on Monday, is not yet legally binding.

Mir and his associate, fellow footballer Pablo Jara, are accused of taking two women to Mir’s villa in the upscale suburb of Betera in September 2024, following a visit to a discotheque. Allegations include rape and bodily harm. In addition to the prison sentence, Mir has been ordered to pay €64,000 in damages to the victims. His associate received a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence and a fine of €6,280.

At the time of the alleged incident, Mir was on loan from FC Sevilla to FC Valencia. He is currently on loan to FC Elche and was instrumental in their La Liga survival last season, contributing eight goals that helped secure the club’s position on the final matchday in Girona (1-1).

In the 2022/2023 season, Mir won the UEFA Europa League with Sevilla. In 2021, he was part of the Spanish Olympic squad that won a silver medal in Tokyo.
