NBA superstar Kawhi Leonard is reportedly attracting significant interest from multiple teams this offseason, with the Detroit Pistons emerging as a potential suitor. With the Los Angeles Clippers’ championship window seemingly closed, Leonard’s future with the franchise is uncertain, and other top teams are looking to bolster their rosters.
According to insider Brett Siegel of Clutch Points, beyond the previously interested parties, the Detroit Pistons might also enter the sweepstakes for Kawhi Leonard. The discussions surrounding both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kawhi Leonard are dominating NBA circles, with significant question marks surrounding their current team futures.
Giannis Antetokounmpo has repeatedly expressed his desire to compete for a championship, a goal that currently seems distant for the Milwaukee Bucks, with whom he has had public exchanges recently. A decision regarding his future is expected by the NBA Draft at the end of June.
Similarly, the championship window for the Los Angeles Clippers appears to have closed. Shortly before the trade deadline, key players James Harden and Ivica Zubac were traded, leaving Leonard as the sole star. Given the uncertain planning in Los Angeles, several playoff-contending teams are closely monitoring Leonard’s situation. «Among the teams expected to inquire about Leonard’s availability – in addition to those who showed interest back in February – are the Detroit Pistons,» stated insider Siegel.
Could the Pistons Trade Duren for Leonard?
The Pistons opted against making significant additions at the trade deadline, foregoing a move for a new star. Under Head Coach J.B. Bickerstaff, the team finished at the top of the Eastern Conference but narrowly avoided an early exit, requiring a Game 7 against the Orlando Magic, where they were fortunate to have Franz Wagner injured on the opposing side. Their playoff run ended in the second round after a seven-game series against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Detroit’s offseason focus will largely revolve around the future of their big man, Jalen Duren. The center was a strong contender for the Most Improved Player award, showcasing an impressive leap in performance during the regular season, which earned him an All-Star selection. However, the 22-year-old’s postseason performance was a shadow of his regular-season self, marked by a string of underwhelming games.
Duren is set to become a restricted free agent this summer. Following his selection to the Third All-NBA Team, he could be in line for a new contract worth up to $287 million. «Prior to the playoffs, the league assumed Duren would command a contract around $200 million due to his All-NBA caliber season,» Siegel recently explained. However, his playoff performance has significantly altered this outlook, with estimates suggesting he may have lost over $50 million in potential earnings during the current playoffs alone.
Despite this, the Pistons announced after their playoff elimination their desire to retain their young player, and Duren has expressed no inclination to leave. Nevertheless, depending on negotiations, a sign-and-trade deal could be on the table, potentially sending Duren to Los Angeles. Coupled with some draft picks and role players, the Clippers could secure a young successor to Zubac at the center position, while the Pistons would acquire a much-needed offensive star in Kawhi, who would also seamlessly integrate into their formidable defense.
Clippers, Pistons, or Warriors? Kawhi’s Future is ‘More Uncertain Than Ever’
Leonard, who last led the Toronto Raptors to a championship in 2019, delivered another strong statistical season despite a complicated year both on and off the court. The 34-year-old played in 65 games, averaging a career-best 27.9 points per game. The seven-time All-Star, selected to the Second All-NBA Team, almost single-handedly carried the Clippers into the Play-In tournament with an incredible comeback, but their season ended in the first round against the Golden State Warriors and their stifling defense led by Draymond Green.
The Warriors reportedly showed interest in Kawhi back in February and might make another move. The franchise, led by superstar Stephen Curry, is reportedly planning another championship push and aims to acquire either Leonard or LeBron James, as reported several weeks ago.
Following the season’s end in mid-April, Kawhi himself was non-committal about his future plans with a year left on his contract. «We’ll talk about it when the time comes,» he stated matter-of-factly. The Athletic corroborated this sentiment, reporting: «His future is more uncertain than ever.»
