Marotta: "Defense can be improved. We are stronger, but if..."
Before the Inter vs. Shakhtar Donetsk match kicks off at 9:00 PM from the Meazza stadium, Inter president Giuseppe Marotta spoke with Sky Sport.
"We also want the three points," Marotta stated. "I believe that over the last 10 years, there's been a cultural shift. Third or fourth-tier teams now come to play prepared, which is new. Even nations previously considered 'easy wins' have evolved. Of course, we are the stronger team, that's a fact. But this must be backed by intensity, not just that..."
When asked if this is a new beginning for Inter, who are obligated to win, Marotta responded, "Clearly. We lost the first two games, and they must teach us something. In our last home match, we struggled significantly. It's exactly what I was saying – a team inferior to us can punish you if underestimated. Today, we need three points."
Addressing the team's recent defensive issues and the potential need for a leader on the back line, Marotta agreed but cautioned against using it as an excuse. "We found ourselves in that sector having to do without four players, and replacing them wasn't easy. It's evident this led to objective difficulties. I don't feel like blaming the defense because football is played across three units, not just one. Something can be done, and improvement is certainly needed."
