«I thought he was a physiotherapist»: Bayern Munich’s transfer flop shares a curious anecdote with ex-coach Hansi Flick

Bouna Sarr has spoken openly about his time at FC Bayern Munich, revealing a humorous anecdote about his former coach, Hansi Flick.

In an interview with the French newspaper L’Equipe, the right-back disclosed that he and Flick first met several months before his official transfer to the German record champions.

During a friendly match between Olympique Marseille, Sarr’s then-club, and Bayern, he initially failed to recognize Flick at all. «He extended his hand to me at halftime and said, ‘Top player!’ But since I thought he was a physiotherapist, I was a bit hesitant. Later, I saw that it was the coach of FC Bayern, who had won the Champions League!» the 34-year-old recalled.

Fortunately, there were no further mix-ups on his first day at Säbener Straße. «Shortly before my first training session at FC Bayern, coach Hansi Flick hugged me and said, ‘I brought you here to play. I’m happy you’re with us. Don’t put any pressure on yourself.'»

Sarr Never Found Happiness at FC Bayern

Bayern paid eight million euros for Sarr in the autumn of 2020, but the Frenchman never truly convinced in Munich. Due to long-term injury layoffs, he made only 33 competitive appearances (one goal, four assists) before his departure in 2024.

Afterward, Sarr had great difficulty finding a new employer. After nearly a year and a half without a club, he joined his youth club Metz at the beginning of this year, where he remains under contract until the summer.

Furthermore, his future is uncertain, as the club, currently 18th in Ligue 1, is on the verge of relegation to the second division. With three games remaining and a nine-point deficit to the relegation playoff spot (16th), staying in the top flight is only theoretically possible.

Since his return, Sarr has played nine times for Metz, and none of these encounters have resulted in a victory (three draws, six losses).
