Heartbreak for Oranje Star Cody Gakpo: Dutch Forward Loses Unborn Son During World Cup

Dutch striker Cody Gakpo has experienced a profound personal tragedy during the World Cup. The 27-year-old FC Liverpool player and his girlfriend, Noa, shared the heartbreaking news on social media that they have lost their unborn son.

Despite this devastating loss, Gakpo, in consultation with his girlfriend, has decided to remain with the Dutch national team, as confirmed by the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) in a statement. His partner posted on Instagram, stating, «With a broken heart, we share the terrible news that our little boy has passed away during pregnancy.» Gakpo shared her post, appealing for privacy during this incredibly difficult time for their family.

The KNVB expressed their deepest sympathy for Cody and his family, particularly for Noa and their son Samuel, acknowledging it as a very sad private situation. The association stated they were already aware of the circumstances and are providing support to the family wherever possible, adding that no further information would be released.

This follows the joyful announcement in May that the couple was expecting their second child, revealing the name Elijah Raphael. Their first son is two years old.

Gakpo faces his next sporting challenge on Tuesday when the Netherlands compete in the Round of 16 against Morocco. He had recently contributed two goals in the Netherlands’ 5-1 victory against Sweden in their last group stage match.
