Portuguese referee Joao Pinheiro will officiate the Champions League semi-final second leg between FC Bayern and defending champions Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
The 38-year-old has previously overseen two Champions League matches involving the Munich club. In the current season, he refereed Bayern’s 2-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven, and in the previous season, he was in charge of their 3-1 win against Slovan Bratislava. Bayern emerged victorious in both encounters.
However, the official also played a role in coach Vincent Kompany’s suspension during the dramatic first leg. Pinheiro issued one of the three crucial yellow cards to the Belgian during the win against PSV, which ultimately led to his ban from the first leg. Following a 4-5 loss in Paris, coach Vincent Kompany’s team will need another victory to advance to the final.
The other semi-final second leg on Tuesday, between FC Arsenal and Atletico Madrid (first leg ended 1-1), will be managed entirely by German officials. Berlin-based referee Daniel Siebert will take charge of the match in London, with all assistant referees also hailing from Germany. Bastian Dankert from Rostock will serve as the video assistant referee.
