Julian Nagelsmann joined FC Bayern in the summer of 2021. However, the record champions had their sights set on the coach six years prior.
The tenure of Julian Nagelsmann at FC Bayern is still fresh in memory. After moving from RB Leipzig to Munich in the summer of 2021, his dismissal in the spring of 2023 came as quite a surprise. Thomas Tuchel then took over, who also did not achieve long-term success in Munich.
What might have happened if Bayern had been rebuffed by TSG Hoffenheim, represented by patron Dietmar Hopp, in 2015? At that time, FCB had already cast an eye on the emerging coaching talent and wanted to bring Nagelsmann to Munich. This was revealed by Michael Reschke, formerly the Technical Director at Bayern, in the podcast ‘Nagelsmann – The Youngest One’ from *t-online*.
‘As a child of the region, it was a great story for him, and he was simply very eager to move to Munich to become the U19 coach within the setup with Pep Guardiola,’ Reschke stated.
Julian Nagelsmann to FC Bayern in 2015? Uli Hoeneß’s Efforts Were in Vain
Uli Hoeneß was also enthusiastic about the idea. He took on the task of contacting TSG patron Hopp, with whom he had a good relationship, and informing him of Bayern’s plan. However, the endeavor failed because ‘Hopp explained to Uli: no chance at all. He is definitely staying; we have big plans with him.’
Even back then, Hopp saw Nagelsmann as the future head coach of the first team, which he indeed became in the winter of 2016 at the young age of 28. In 2019, the current national team coach moved on to RB Leipzig before accepting the call to Munich two years later. In 2022, Nagelsmann won the German championship with Bayern.
