Darwin Núñez’s Contract Terminated: Former £85 Million Liverpool Star Set for Free Transfer

Darwin Núñez’s career might be heading towards a new chapter. Could the striker be returning to the Premier League?

According to the English newspaper Mirror, the 26-year-old has mutually terminated his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal.

Núñez had only moved to the desert last summer from Liverpool for 53 million Euros. However, the Reds had paid a hefty 85 million Euros for the Uruguayan approximately four years ago, making him available on a free transfer for the upcoming season.

A return to the Premier League is a distinct possibility. Both Newcastle United and Chelsea are reportedly showing interest. But how did this drastic step at Al Hilal come about?

Núñez’s Playing Rights Revoked

Núñez’s playing rights in the Saudi Pro League were revoked in the winter after Karim Benzema joined Al Hilal. The reason for this is the local foreign player regulation, which stipulates a maximum of ten foreign players per squad, with eight of any age and two U20 players allowed.

Previously, Núñez had only partially met the high expectations placed upon him. In 22 matches, he scored nine goals and provided five assists. Benzema, since his arrival in early February, has recorded the same number of goals and assists but in ten fewer games.

The current situation is unwelcome news for Núñez with the World Cup looming this summer. The 26-year-old has not played a competitive club match since February 16th. Although he scored two goals in the final group stage match of the AFC Champions League, where he was still eligible to play, he was not part of the squad for the team’s Round of 16 exit in April. Consequently, his starting position in the national team is now significantly in doubt. He was, however, brought on as a substitute in the closing stages of the friendly matches against England and Algeria at the end of March. This suggests he is still likely to be at least nominated for the squad.
