Debutant Curacao has earned its first point in World Cup history with great heart and bold attacking intent, gifting the German national team premature group stage victory.
The team led by national coach Dick Advocaat secured a well-deserved 0-0 draw against Germany’s next opponent, Ecuador, in Kansas City. Just under a week after their heavy defeat against Germany (1-7), Curacao, thanks in part to their outstanding goalkeeper Eloy Room, added a success story to their footballing fairytale.
Curacao can still leapfrog to second place in their historic first World Cup appearance with a strong performance against Ivory Coast. Ecuador had been particularly impressive defensively during World Cup qualification, but in their second World Cup match, the team of national coach Sebastián Beccacece once again struggled offensively.
Ecuador started with great intensity and came close to scoring their first tournament goal immediately. Captain Enner Valencia, after a strong pass from his own half, ran through alone on Room but was thwarted by the sharp reflexes of the experienced custodian. The underdog, for their part, did not hide, repeatedly pushing into the final third with pace in the lively opening phase, but their finishing was too imprecise.
Ecuador Hits the Crossbar Shortly Before the End
Curacao’s attacking approach offered ‘La Tri’ space, and the South Americans also forced errors from their opponents with early pressing, thereby creating chances. Pedro Vite (14th minute) was denied from a tight angle, and Valencia’s shot after a cross from former Leverkusen player Piero Hincapié (20th minute) was too central. The powerful strike from Gonzalo Plata (28th minute) also posed no problem for Room. Before halftime, Curacao retreated slightly, forming two tight defensive lines. Ecuador lacked ideas. The shot from John Yeboah, born in Hamburg, was too unplaced (42nd minute).
Even after the break, Ecuador failed to capitalize on their greater individual quality. The favored team rarely found a way through, and frequent long-range shots were a sign of growing desperation. Danger arose from set pieces, with Plata (59th minute) heading wide despite a strong save from Room. Curacao relied on counter-attacks and came close to a sensation, with Ecuador’s goalkeeper Hernan Galíndez being put under immense pressure during a triple chance (60th minute). Overall, however, Ecuador had the better opportunities. Curacao’s goalkeeper Room excelled, making save after save, including in the final stages. Additionally, Ecuador’s Angelo Preciado struck the crossbar (90th minute).
