While a glimmer of renewed tension might have emerged in the Bundesliga, league leaders SCM successfully fended off the challenge from World Handball Player Mathias Gidsel and his team.
SC Magdeburg triumphed in a thrilling handball encounter against Füchse Berlin, taking a significant stride towards the championship title.
The reigning Champions League winners secured a 35:33 (15:15) victory in a high-caliber match against the defending champions, extending their lead over Berlin to eight points. SCM earned their success through an exceptionally strong second-half performance.
«It was an exhausting week, and we aimed to elevate our performance beyond what we’ve shown in recent weeks and months. Delivering this level of play today was fantastic,» stated Magdeburg’s Gisli Kristjánsson after the game. «The championship is now 100 percent in our hands. Only our own mindset or a lack of mentality can stop us.»
Füchse Berlin: Even 11 Goals from Mathias Gidsel Insufficient
While the championship is not yet mathematically decided, Coach Bennet Wiegert’s team now holds all the cards. As league leaders, SCM boasts a seven-point advantage over SG Flensburg-Handewitt, with Berlin trailing in third. THW Kiel’s title hopes were dashed following their surprising defeat to MT Melsungen on Friday.
Magnus Saugstrup was SCM’s top scorer on Saturday with nine goals, while for Füchse, as often, World Handball Player Mathias Gidsel stood out with eleven goals.
SCM Goalkeeper Matej Mandic Shines in Second Half
Goalkeepers also played a crucial role. Füchse’s Dejan Milosavljev frustrated Magdeburg, particularly in the first half, by saving numerous seven-meter throws. However, SCM’s goalkeeper Matej Mandic was instrumental in their strong second-half performance.
«If anyone can beat Magdeburg, it’s most likely Berlin,» said national coach Alfred Gislason prior to the match. Füchse started with great concentration and offensive variety. In goal, they relied on Milosavljev, who proved almost insurmountable for SCM, especially on seven-meter throws.
Nevertheless, neither team managed to pull ahead significantly. The game was, as expected, fiercely contested and open, with Füchse holding a slight advantage in the first half. However, with the support of their fans and the formidable goalkeeper Mandic, SCM fought their way back into the game and ultimately secured the victory.
