BVB II Announces Six Departures and a Club Icon’s Exit

Borussia Dortmund’s second team is set for a major restructuring in the upcoming season, with six players and a club icon departing. The club announced on Monday that Leroy Kwadwo, Patrick Göbel, Jonas Feddersen, Prince Aning, Nick Cherny, and Babis Drakas will be leaving the Regionalliga side. Their contracts are set to expire on June 30th.

Additionally, former championship hero Marcel Schmelzer is leaving BVB «at his own request.» Schmelzer, who recently served as an assistant coach for Dortmund’s reserve team, is seeking new challenges elsewhere, as is physiotherapist Daniel Zolinski.

The club has already secured one new signing: defender Nanitamo Quiala, who joins from Hertha Zehlendorf on a free transfer. Goalkeeper Aaron Held and forward Taycan Etcibasi will be promoted from the U19 team.

BVB Reserve Previously Relegated from 3. Liga

The BVB reserve team concluded their Regionalliga West season in fifth place after a 0-2 loss to SC Wiedenbrück. The team managed to secure only two points in their final four matches. Following the game, coach Daniel Rios described the defeat as «deserved,» stating, «We created too few chances to take anything from here. And in the moments when we had to defend, we didn’t do it well. We were too slow with the ball.»

The previous season saw BVB II relegated from the 3. Liga. Shortly thereafter, coach Mike Tullberg joined FC Midtjylland and is reportedly a candidate to succeed Albert Riera at Eintracht Frankfurt.
