The 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico will see a record 48 participating teams, necessitating changes to the tournament’s format compared to previous editions.

The 48 participating teams will be distributed into twelve groups of four teams each for the preliminary round. In the 2026 World Cup, the top two teams from each group will automatically qualify for the knockout stage. However, a third-place finish can also lead to advancement, as the eight best-ranked third-placed teams will also proceed to the Round of 32, completing the 32-team field for the knockout phase.

The World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026. The draw for the World Cup groups was held in early December 2025. For example, Germany is in a preliminary group with Curacao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador.

During the draw, the 48 participating teams, six of which still qualified via playoffs in late March, were allocated to the twelve preliminary groups.

Telekom has secured the German broadcasting rights for the 2026 World Cup, and will broadcast all 104 tournament matches live on MagentaTV. A paid subscription is required to watch the World Cup on MagentaTV.

However, 60 of the 104 World Cup matches will also be broadcast live and free of charge on free-to-air television, as ARD and ZDF, as sublicensees of Telekom, have also acquired broadcasting rights. This includes all of Germany’s World Cup matches, as well as both semi-finals and the final, which will definitely be broadcast live on free-to-air TV by ARD or ZDF.
