«Then Italy would soon be World Champions again!» UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin makes a proposal for the Squadra Azzurra

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin offers crucial backing to Italian FA President Gabriele Gravina and presents a significant proposal, even as Italy grapples with its third consecutive World Cup qualification disappointment.

The repeated failure of Italy to qualify for the World Cup has escalated into a major political issue, intensifying pressure on Gabriele Gravina, who has presided over the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) since 2018. Following demands for his resignation from the second-largest government party, Lega, reports indicate that Italy’s Sports Minister Andrea Abodi also advocated for Gravina’s departure. Various parliamentary factions have echoed these calls. However, Gravina finds support from the UEFA President, who has put forward his own ideas.

Minister Abodi has been quoted stressing the urgent need for a complete restructuring of Italian football, beginning with a renewal of its leadership. He deemed it unjust to evade responsibility for Italy’s third successive World Cup absence. Abodi drew parallels to Gravina’s predecessors, Luigi Abete and Carlo Tavecchio, who both resigned after the nation’s failed World Cup qualification campaigns in 2018 and 2022, respectively.

Furthermore, forty senators from both the governing coalition and the opposition have signed a motion urging Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to provide an ‘urgent’ report to Parliament on the state of Italian football. They argue that the repeated failure to reach the World Cup is more than just a sporting defeat; it represents a significant setback for a vital social, cultural, and economic sector of the country.

Discussion Around the National Team Coach Position

Should Gravina accede to the political demands, Giovanni Malago, former president of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), is considered a leading candidate for his succession. Meanwhile, potential successors for the national team coach include Napoli manager Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini, who led Italy to the European Championship title in 2021.

Senator Ignazio Larussa has introduced an initial concrete proposal for reform, suggesting that clubs should be mandated to field at least four Italian players for the entire duration of matches.

Ceferin Criticizes Italian Politics

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin identifies political interference as a core problem hindering Italian football. He commented that Italian politicians should perhaps reflect on why Italy possesses one of Europe’s poorest football infrastructures. Ceferin asserted, «The biggest problem in Italian football is the relationship between football politics and ‘normal’ politics. If everyone pulled together, Italy would soon be European and World Champions again.»
