A bizarre turn of events has unfolded in the case of the vanished Füchse Berlin championship trophy.
The prestigious «Meisterschale,» awarded to the German handball champions, has been discovered in the basement of the club’s own business office. Füchse Berlin announced the surprising find on Monday, expressing their astonishment over the recovery of the trophy, which had been missing since last November.
«Honestly, I still can’t quite believe it, but the trophy is back,» stated managing director Bob Hanning. «We can all rejoice that this tradition is preserved and that the teams who have won and will win it can once again hold it in their hands.» Prior to this discovery, it was widely assumed that the valuable trophy had been melted down by thieves.
Burglars had reportedly gained access to the office building last November, making off with both cash and the coveted trophy. Füchse Berlin promptly filed a police report, leading to the arrest of two suspects by criminal police in mid-January.
Thieves’ Clever Hiding Spot for Championship Trophy Revealed
Now, the extraordinary twist: «Recently, however, a significant discovery was made by chance in the basement rooms of the business office. The thieves had cleverly hidden the championship trophy there, intending to retrieve it at a later date. It is presumed that the widespread public attention surrounding the missing trophy ultimately deterred them from attempting to collect it,» the Füchse Berlin statement detailed.
The Berlin club, featuring the three-time World Handball Player Mathias Gidsel, had secured their first-ever championship title in summer 2023.
