The Biggest Miracle of the Season! No One Believed in This Historic Success Story

SV Elversberg is poised to become the smallest Bundesliga location in history. Many had little hope for the Saarlanders at the start of the season.

The town hall in Spiesen-Elversberg doesn’t have a balcony for a potential promotion celebration. However, in this community of 12,800 residents, officials are flexible. Just as they were during their rapid ascent from the Regionalliga to the second division, a ‘party’ scaffold will likely be erected in no time on the small forecourt for the football heroes. With a triumphant climb into the Bundesliga, SV Elversberg could reach the provisional peak of their fairy-tale journey – and simultaneously make history.

The municipality, part of the Neunkirchen district, would indeed be promoted to become the smallest location in the history of the German elite league, replacing Unterhaching, which has 22,000 inhabitants.

To achieve this, the Saarlanders must prevail in a gripping three-way battle against equally scoring pursuers Hannover 96 and SC Paderborn. Given their goal difference, which is six goals better than Hannover’s and ten better than Paderborn’s, a victory of their own should be enough.

Furthermore, on Sunday (3:30 PM/Sky), they face a seemingly grateful opponent in the season finale at the Kaiserlinde: the already relegated Preußen Münster.

Coach Vincent Wagner Optimistic Despite ‘Worst Game of the Season’

‘We should be happy. Now it’s matchday 34, and we are deservedly in second place,’ said coach Vincent Wagner. ‘We now have a final – and the luxury of playing at home.’ Despite the setback last week, he is ‘still very optimistic that we can achieve this.’

However, the 1-3 defeat against relegation candidate Fortuna Düsseldorf was a wake-up call. ‘It was by far the worst game of the season,’ lamented captain Lukas Pinckert. ‘We have to blame ourselves for not going onto the pitch so nervously; I simply missed that free-flowing play, that Elversberg identity that defines us.’

Now, the ‘maximum pressure is on,’ added Amara Conde. ‘We have no other choice; we have to win at home.’

Horst Steffen and Ole Book: Architects of Success Attract Interest

The fact that the village club from Elversberg, primarily sponsored by the pharmaceutical company Ursapharm by Frank Holzer, is reaching for the stars for the second consecutive year is almost a miracle. This is because their excellent work is undeniably attracting increasing interest from competitors. Nils-Ole Book and Horst Steffen, the architects of their sporting success, have moved to the Bundesliga, and their best players are in high demand.

It is particularly worth examining the squad changes between the 2024/25 season, which ended in a relegation playoff against 1. FC Heidenheim, and the current season. First, there was the departure of long-time coach Steffen, who moved to Werder Bremen. He was replaced by Wagner, who was brought in by Sporting Director Book, who has since moved to Borussia Dortmund.

The 40-year-old arrived with the recommendation of 102 games in the Regionalliga Südwest as coach of TSG Hoffenheim’s second team and proved to be an absolute stroke of luck. Wagner immediately established the team in the top group of the 2. Liga with their favored 4-2-3-1 formation, placing in the top 3 on 24 out of 33 matchdays.

This is all the more astonishing because not only was the coach new, but Elversberg had also lost the core of their highly successful squad from the previous season.

Asllani, Damar, Ebnoutalib: Elversberg Loses Key Player After Key Player

Fisnik Asllani, the top scorer, departed, along with significant key players like Muhammed Damar, Semih Sahin, Maurice Neubauer, Robin Fellhauer, and Elias Baum. This sextet alone accounted for 178 appearances, responsible for 42 goals and 35 assists. To make matters worse, Younes Ebnoutalib, who had emerged as a surprisingly potent successor to Asllani with twelve goals in 17 games, also left in the past winter.

A general collapse of SV Elversberg, or at least a slump after the winter transfer window, would not have surprised anyone, but it did not happen.

Book’s astonishing intuition and generally excellent scouting once again produced a superbly coordinated team, in which HSV loanee Lukas Poreba is a focal point, alongside established pillars like goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof, captain Pinckert, center-back Maximilian Rohr, and forwards Lukas Petkov, Tom Zimmerschied, and Luca Schellbacher. They also showed good judgment with loan players Conte (Hoffenheim) and Immanuel Pherai (HSV, from winter).

Thus, Elversberg could bring the Saarland back to the Bundesliga after 33 years; 1. FC Saarbrücken was the last team from the region to play in the top flight in the 1992/93 season. A third promotion in five years beckons. ‘We have shown for 33 matchdays what kind of football we can play,’ said Zimmerschied, adding a declaration of intent: ‘Now we’ll bring it home.’

So that the scaffold in front of the town hall can be used for proper celebrations once again.
