A highly controversial «ghost goal» has sent shockwaves through the 3. Liga relegation battle, leaving the disadvantaged team in utter disbelief.
Terrence Boyd’s apparent winning goal in the 90th minute, which sealed a 2-1 victory for Waldhof Mannheim against Erzgebirge Aue, is now poised to be remembered as a phantom goal in the league’s history.
With the score tied at 1-1 late in the game, the veteran striker powerfully struck the ball against the underside of the crossbar. Replays subsequently revealed that while a large portion of the ball appeared to have crossed the goal line, it still visibly touched the line. Despite this, referee Timon Schulz allowed the goal to stand after a brief hesitation.
This decision drew intense ire from relegation-threatened Aue. Immediately after the goal, goalkeeper coach Alexander Kunze received a red card for vehement protests from the visiting bench. Head coach Christoph Dabrowski voiced strong opinions after the final whistle, especially given that a goal for the Saxony-based club had already been disallowed in the 64th minute due to a tight offside call.
Ghost Goal? «I See It From 80 Meters Away on the Sideline»
«I am utterly frustrated,» fumed Dabrowski, speaking about the incident. «When I look at the second goal against us: I see from 80 meters away on the sideline that the ball was never in the goal. I lack any understanding for this. I don’t need to watch this anymore. On one side, offside; on the other, a meter in front of the line. The referee should look at it himself and realize what’s at stake,» he lashed out at referee Schulz. «I asked him how old he is and if he is even qualified to officiate a 3. Liga match.»
Marvin Stefaniak was equally furious, exclaiming, «This is unbelievable, what has been haunting us these past weeks, what bad luck we’re having, what awful goals we’re conceding. I could just explode, I’m speechless.»
Erzgebirge Aue Slides Towards Relegation
Stefaniak himself had given his team a temporary lead just before halftime (44th minute). Less than five minutes after the restart, Lovis Bierschenk scored the equalizer, before Boyd’s controversial goal sent the stadium into an uproar.
With this defeat, Aue is sliding unchecked towards relegation. The gap to safety (1. FC Saarbrücken, 16th place) is now a daunting nine points for the 18th-placed team.
