Svilar Commits to Roma: A Five-Year Deal Finalized

AS Roma is on the brink of officially securing one of its most valuable assets. Goalkeeper Mile Svilar is set to sign a contract extension that will keep him at the Stadio Olimpico until 2030. While not a new face arriving, for many Giallorossi supporters, this renewal feels every bit as significant as a major transfer.

The agreement, reportedly worth approximately €4 million per season including performance-related bonuses (with a fixed salary around €3.4 million), signifies the club`s commitment to the Serbian international. Negotiations have reached the final stages, with only minor details pending before the official announcement.

The path to this agreement wasn`t entirely smooth. Initial offers made under the previous technical management were, frankly, perceived as quite modest, reportedly starting around €1.6 million and later increasing slightly to €2 million plus bonuses. This led to complications and a degree of friction with the player`s representatives.

However, the club ultimately recognized the undeniable importance of retaining Svilar, who some observers have hailed as potentially the best goalkeeper in Serie A based on recent form. Losing such a crucial player would have been, perhaps, an unnecessary own goal, especially considering the unwavering support shown by the fanbase, exemplified by over 40,000 season ticket holders already secured for the upcoming season.

A key figure in bridging the gap and bringing the parties closer appears to have been Claudio Ranieri. While his exact role is not specified in formal terms, his influence reportedly played a decisive part in the psychological aspect of the negotiation, helping to realign expectations and desires on both sides.

Svilar himself has made his intentions clear. He dismissed speculation linking him elsewhere, including a reported €6 million offer from Galatasaray, indicating his desire to remain in the Italian capital. He even celebrated the impending agreement with a series of photos and a pointed message on Instagram: “Unique emotions, only Roma fans understand. Forza Roma.”

The contract duration is set at five years, running until 2030. While there was some discussion about potentially utilizing a recent legal decree that extends the maximum length of professional contracts from five to eight years, practicalities dictated otherwise. To sign Svilar until 2033 under the new legislation, the club would have needed to wait for the decree to be officially converted into law, a process that could take up to two months from its publication date (June 30th). Neither the player nor the club wished to delay finalizing the deal, making the five-year option the straightforward and preferred path for now.

Svilar`s summer break has been notable for reasons beyond contract talks. He recently became a father for the first time to his son, Lio-Mile. This personal event meant foregoing traditional holiday travel, instead spending time at home in Antwerp. However, he evidently didn`t neglect his professional preparation. A video shared on Instagram showed him actively training, performing drills and saves, ensuring he will arrive at the Trigoria training ground in optimal condition, ready to join the squad under the new technical guidance of Gian Piero Gasperini and celebrate his new long-term commitment.
