The Stadio Olimpico bid an emotional farewell to Claudio Ranieri. Following Roma`s victory over Milan, a match setting a new attendance record for the stadium`s current capacity with 68,143 fans, the Giallorossi supporters showed their appreciation for the Roman-born, Roma-supporting coach. They gave him a long round of applause and a standing ovation.
Meanwhile, the players formed a `guard of honor` at midfield to salute their coach. Ranieri, joined on the pitch by his grandchildren, was presented with the Capitoline Wolf – a symbol of Rome – by captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, recognizing his dedication throughout his career.
Addressing the fans, Ranieri said, “Good evening everyone, I remember standing among you more than 60 years ago, thank you. I had asked you for help because together we could do something good, only the final step remains.”
He concluded his speech, “I am proud of these lads because they followed me from the first day, and it`s not easy. You understood that we needed your love. Thank you, infinitely thank you.” He then completed a traditional lap of honor around the pitch, receiving another wave of ovations from the fans, in addition to the one at the match`s start, which included dedicated chants and choreography that visibly moved him.
