Spalletti: “De Laurentiis? I would have preferred more humanity”

Italy coach Luciano Spalletti recently opened up on various topics, including the national team`s qualification push for the 2026 World Cup, his past relationship with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, and making peace with former player Francesco Totti. Speaking on the program `Cinque Minuti` about his experience winning the Scudetto with Napoli, Spalletti reflected on his time there, stating regarding De Laurentiis: “It was a somewhat conflicting relationship. I would have preferred him to have shown a bit more humanity towards me, given the commitment I put in.”

“Nothing washes over me, neither victories nor defeats; I am very loyal to my life, both professionally and emotionally,” he added. “We haven`t spoken since, but perhaps the opportunity will arise now.” Commenting on the city itself, he said: “Naples? No city knows how to be so happy and melancholic. Having witnessed its happiness is something I will carry with me forever.”

Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against opponents including Norway, Israel, Estonia, and Moldova, Spalletti expressed confidence in the squad. “We go with all possible confidence. We face a hurdle like Norway, who are equipped to make life difficult for any footballing story,” he noted. “Is the squad ready? In my opinion, the squad is ready; we`ve made significant steps forward. I have identified and received important responses from these players, who will largely remain the same, although we must be careful to open the door to those who knock.”

Spalletti also recounted the call from FIGC president Gravina offering him the national coaching job. “I didn`t expect it; it was a complete surprise,” he said. He shared a personal memory of the 1970 Italy-Germany match, recalling how he asked his mother to quickly fashion a flag from fabric scraps at home with her old Singer machine to celebrate with friends.

Regarding his reconciliation with Francesco Totti, Spalletti stated: “I liked to think that my destiny was entrusted to the quality and magical feet of this champion… for me, having embraced him again… we will remain great friends. I always did everything for the good of Roma, never personally.” Asked if Italy is currently strong, Spalletti concluded: “We are about to become strong, and we must achieve that quickly.”
