Speaking on `Radio Anch`io lo Sport`, Ezio Simonelli, the President of Lega Serie A, discussed some specifics regarding the final matchday of the current season and key dates for the upcoming championship.
Concerning the final matchday, he explained, “We have two matches that are essentially `free` from major implications, Milan-Monza and Bologna-Genoa. Then there are the two games relevant to the Scudetto outcome, and six matches that affect qualification for European competitions and the relegation battle. This means we will essentially have the matches divided into 3 or 4 distinct blocks.”
He commented on the scheduling challenges for specific fixtures: “For games like Como-Inter and Napoli-Cagliari, it will be a difficult decision. On one hand, we would like to give fans the joy of seeing their team win on a holiday. On the other hand, we need to potentially allow Inter adequate rest before a possible playoff [for European qualification], although that scenario currently seems unlikely. Regarding a potential playoff location, it couldn`t be played in Milan due to a specific ruling; Rome would be the only feasible venue.”
Looking ahead to the 2025-2026 Serie A season, Simonelli confirmed details about the schedule. “Christmas falls on a Thursday, so we will play on the weekend before and the weekend after. New Year`s is also covered, with games scheduled for January 3rd-4th. However, there will be no breaks [for the holidays].” He attributed this to the packed schedule, stating, “The calendar is extremely congested, but not due to us, which makes pauses impossible. We will likely play again around Easter as well.”
Regarding the full season calendar release, he stated, “The calendar will remain asymmetrical. There will be some things that need adjustment, and we will consider any inconsistencies that occurred previously. I confirm that the calendar will be released on June 6th. I had requested its publication be brought forward as much as possible.”
