Eintracht Frankfurt coach Albert Riera has reportedly not included Mario Götze in the squad for the upcoming match against FSV Mainz 05.
The 2014 World Cup winner will not be part of the squad for Sunday’s away game against Mainz 05, despite being fit and available for selection.
The exclusion is said to be based purely on sporting reasons, and Götze reportedly reacted with great surprise to coach Riera’s decision. The 33-year-old had already spent the full 90 minutes on the bench in the last two matches against FC St. Pauli (0-0) and 1. FC Heidenheim (1-0), and now faces complete omission from the squad.
Already on Friday at the press conference, Riera had announced, in light of the comebacks of Younes Ebnoutalib and Can Uzun, that he would have to make some tough decisions regarding the matchday squad selection: «I will field the players who best suit the opponent. I even have to drop some players.»
Is Götze’s Contract Extension at Frankfurt in Jeopardy?
Götze’s contract with Eintracht Frankfurt runs until the end of the current season. Recently, there had been rumors that both parties could envision continuing together for another year, with discussions reportedly well advanced.
It is unclear how a potential squad exclusion for Götze might affect this situation. In the past, other clubs have shown interest in the 33-year-old midfielder.
