Rio World Cup winner Mats Hummels is left in awe by the top scorer list at the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

France captain Kylian Mbappé has taken the lead in the rankings with his goal to make it 1-0 during the Equipe Tricolore's 2-0 victory in the quarter-finals against Morocco.

The Real Madrid striker now has eight goals to his name, drawing level with Argentina's captain Lionel Messi. However, some other big names are hot on their heels: Norway's top scorer Erling Haaland has seven goals. England's superstar Harry Kane also has the opportunity to increase his tally of six tournament goals in the upcoming quarter-final match. Following them is Mbappé's teammate Ousmane Dembélé (five goals).

While the rankings were displayed, MagentaTV expert Hummels commented: "This list is something else. I've never seen anything like it." Jürgen Klopp was also surprised and had to ask Mbappé's age. When the answer was "27," the former BVB and Liverpool coach revealed: "Mats said: He'll manage to have more World Cup goals than he has league goals by the end of his career."

Mbappé now has 20 goals in 20 World Cup appearances, while the former defender Hummels has, by his own admission, scored "somewhere around 30" (it's actually 33). Klopp emphasized that he himself had scored 52, but was immediately met with a quip from Hummels: "Second division, how does that count for the Golden Shoe?"

Kylian Mbappé Reaches 100 Goal Contributions for the French National Team

Meanwhile, Mbappé could have potentially increased his goal count even further. In the middle of the first half, he missed a penalty with a weak attempt that was saved by Morocco's penalty specialist Yassine Bounou.

All the more satisfying was his curling shot in the 60th minute, which put the overwhelmingly dominant Bleus on the path to victory. It was a goal that brought him several records. Among them, he is now the first Frenchman to reach 100 direct goal contributions (64 goals, 36 assists) in international matches.

The brief moment of concern when he briefly iced his ankle a quarter of an hour before the end was quickly overcome as Mbappé took the lead in celebrations on the pitch at the Foxborough Stadium after the final whistle, appearing to be not seriously injured.

"I'm fine. I took a knock to the heel, but I'm okay," Mbappé later stated, and coach Didier Deschamps assured: "There's nothing serious."
