Stuttgart finished the match with ten men after Nikolas Nartey received a second yellow card in the 77th minute, leading to a red. Porto now advances to the quarter-finals, where they will face Nottingham Forest. For VfB Stuttgart, the focus now shifts back to the Bundesliga, with an upcoming match against FC Augsburg on Sunday crucial for securing a Champions League qualification spot.

VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß had urged his team before the match to play "cleanly, smartly, and emotionally" and to "show all facets required for the game." However, almost out of nowhere, the hosts celebrated as Gomes clinically finished the Portuguese side's first promising attack. It was only just before halftime that VfB's pressure waned slightly, allowing Porto to become more active offensively.

After the break, the Portuguese league leaders once again focused on defense, continuing to rely on an outstanding Diogo Costa, who brilliantly saved another volley from Undav. Stuttgart pressed tirelessly, launching attack after attack, but could not find the breakthrough. Froholdt's stunning shot into the top corner ultimately extinguished all hopes for the visitors, who shortly thereafter found themselves a man down when Nartey was sent off for repeated fouls.
