Hansi Flick Extends Barcelona Contract, Declares Club Will Be His Last Before Retirement

Hansi Flick is reportedly set to extend his contract with FC Barcelona and appears poised to conclude his illustrious coaching career after his eventual departure from the Catalan giants.

Club President Joan Laporta, speaking in an interview following his re-election, confirmed that the 61-year-old coach is on the verge of signing an extension until 2028, prolonging his current deal which was set to expire in 2027.

"He is in favor – and we will announce the agreement shortly, as he feels very comfortable here," Laporta stated. An official announcement from the club was still pending, and Flick himself chose not to confirm the news before a crucial Champions League Round of 16 second leg against Newcastle United.

"I don't think it's the right time. We have a very important match," the 61-year-old said on Tuesday, but clarified: "I love working here. We have plenty of time, and I'm not thinking about going anywhere else. I am here, and this will be my last club, my last job. I am very happy about that."

Laporta had heavily relied on Flick during his election campaign against his main rival, Víctor Font. "The president is the reason I am here," Flick had previously remarked in December, referring to the election. Laporta secured 68.18 percent of the votes, including Flick's, while Font received 29.78 percent. Laporta is scheduled to resume his presidential duties in July, having stepped down weeks prior during the election process.

Laporta Praises Flick: 'A Young, Energetic Man'

The 63-year-old president is set to remain at the helm of the venerable Catalan club until 2031.

"I would very much like to complete this entire term with Hansi Flick. I believe it's possible for him to stay at Barca for another five years. That would signal stability and demonstrate our success," Laporta asserted. He described Flick as "a young, energetic man" who "made the team function with the very same players who weren't performing before. He gave the squad a boost through his clarity in explaining his thoughts," Laporta added.

Flick had taken charge of Barcelona in the summer of 2024, guiding them to a domestic double of the league title and cup in his inaugural season. Prior to his time at Camp Nou, the Heidelberg native coached Bayern Munich, where he famously secured the treble in 2020, and also managed the German national team from 2021 to 2023.
