AC Milan Weighs Selling Star Leao After Outburst | Bundesliga Talent Eyed as Replacement
AC Milan is reportedly losing patience with its superstar Rafael Leao and is now considering selling the Portuguese winger. Recent incidents, particularly his behavior after being substituted in the match against Lazio Rome, could have far-reaching consequences for his future with the Rossoneri.
It is rumored that Leao is no longer considered untouchable, and Milan will be open to offers in the coming months. A proposed early contract extension until 2030 is now uncertain, and even if it goes through, it would not guarantee his stay beyond the summer.
The 26-year-old Leao, who has also been courted by Bayern Munich, became Milan's top earner after his last contract extension in summer 2023. His net annual salary is around 6.5 million Euros, and his fixed release clause stands at 170 million Euros.
Rafael Leao's Outburst After Substitution Against Lazio
Coach Massimiliano Allegri deployed Leao as a central striker in the match against Lazio, where the forward delivered a lackluster performance. In the 67th minute, he was substituted for Niclas Füllkrug. Leao reacted visibly frustrated, slowly trudging off the field and needing encouragement from goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Once on the sidelines, he slightly pushed away Allegri, who tried to embrace him, and complained with expressive gestures. He later unleashed his anger on several water bottles, and an altercation with Christian Pulisic reportedly even occurred in the locker room.
Former Milan captain Massimo Ambrosini sharply criticized Leao: "The frustration he shows when he's substituted, he should rather show when he's on the pitch. There, he gives the impression of lacking ambition. In the 34th minute, he only had four touches of the ball, including one header. It seems as if he always needs external motivation and lacks that inner drive." Ambrosini called deploying Leao as a central striker a "waste" and would have preferred to see him on the wing.
Allegri, meanwhile, attempted to downplay the situation. "Leao was a bit annoyed because he would have liked more support in some situations," said the coach. "So he was a bit angry. But these things can happen during a game."
AC Milan: Could Antonio Nusa Replace Rafael Leao?
Leao has faced criticism multiple times in recent years for his body language and on-field behavior. His performances this season have been inconsistent; after 24 competitive matches, he has ten goals and two assists.
Should the Serie A runner-up indeed part ways with its star, a successor candidate is reportedly already on their list: RB Leipzig's winger Antonio Nusa. The Norwegian international could be available for 35 million Euros.
